Cable.co.uk said that, in its tests, mean download speed in Luxembourg was 118.05Mbps (compared to the global average of 24.83Mbps). The average time to download a 5GB HD movie was 5 minutes and 47 seconds (compared to the global average of 2 hours, 12 minutes and 21 seconds).

To compile the report, which was released in April, researchers conducted speed checks in 221 countries and territories. “The majority of faster countries [were] clustered around Europe, and most of the slowest countries on the African continent.”

Liechtenstein had the world’s fastest connections, followed by Jersey, Andorra and Gibraltar. Belgium placed 24th, France 36th and Germany 42nd. The slowest connections were logged in Syria, Equatorial Guinea, Turkmenistan, Yemen and South Sudan (ranked 221st).

Cable.co.uk worked on the report with M-Lab, an open source project whose members include the not-for-profit Code for Science and Society, Google and Princeton University.

Globally, they carried out 577,488,512 speed tests (including 62,713 in Luxembourg) and tested 150,109,350 unique IP addresses (including 6,840 in Luxembourg) in 2019.
