The score was 0-0 after the 94-minute match held in the southern French city of Toulouse on Sunday.

That means the grand duchy’s national football team has placed Les Blues’ path to the 2018 World Cup in Russia in jeopardy, as they now only are one point ahead of Sweden in Group A.

France is still top ranked in Group A, while Luxembourg is 5th out of 6.

Reporting on the match, The Telegraph wrote on 3 September that:

“Luxembourg, ranked 136 in the world, came into the game on the back of a morale-boosting 1-0 win over Belarus on Thursday, but nobody would have expected them to get anything from this game, against a team of world superstars.”

The Guardian reported that France:

“were unable to break Luxembourg’s stout resistance despite dominating possession and hitting the bar twice for a result that left them only a point clear at the top of the group.”

According to BBC Sport:

“Les Bleus, who beat the Netherlands 4-0 on Thursday, had 76% of possession, 34 shots and hit the woodwork twice but could not find a winner.

“It is the first time they have failed to beat Luxembourg since 1914.”

Sweden will host Luxembourg on 7 October.

The Luxembourg Football Federation called the result “sensational”
