French health authorities developed the Nutri-Score label, which has since been adopted by a number of countries and is supported by the European Commission and the World Health Organization.

The front-of-pack nutritional label is seen as a tool to help people adopt healthier eating habits. Consumers in Luxembourg will already be familiar with seeing the traffic-light style label on packing of foods imported from Belgium, Germany and other EU countries where it’s already being applied.

Producers in Luxembourg will now be able to apply for the label, which remains voluntary. However, if companies choose to have one of their products ranked, they must apply the label to all products of their brand to avoid only healthier options being marketed with a good score.

The label takes into account calories, saturated fat, sugars and salt but also fibre and proteins, among other nutritional values. Food is then assigned a colour and letter from A (green) to E (red) based on its score per 100g or 100ml.
