Wind turbines are to play a large role in hitting this target, déi Gréng energy minister Claude Turmes said, responding to a parliamentary question from Martine Hansen and Gilles Roth (both CSV). In 2017, wind parks generated 235 GWh, powering over 52,000 households.

Luxembourg expects to increase this rate to 676 GWh by 2030. To get there, Turmes clearly seems in favour of wind as an alternative energy source, saying that a single turbine generates the equivalent electricity of a 9-hectare photovoltaic park.

In his answer, released on 26 June, he does not outline where future turbines will be located.

However, in 2018, energy firm Soler announced the construction of 41 wind turbines in Luxembourg, in Garnich, Harlange-Watrage, Dalheim, near Esch-sur-Alzette, Redange, Mersch and in the Ernz valley. At the time, there were 42 wind turbines in the country.

The next sustainable energy bill, outlining the country’s strategy for the next decade, is expected to be voted at the end of 2019.
