Hailed as the word’s first AI-generated score to be written for a city, the original score was inspired by western classical music the company says.

In order to realise the piece, the team at AIVA had to teach the AI to understand what makes each score emotionally unique, by feeding the algorithm with more than 30,000 scores of original symphonic music and then matching them to more than 20 different categories of input including moods, note density, composer style and musical epoch.

“By collecting all this data directly associated to scores, AIVA can create the DNA of the musical language that ultimately allows it to write a piece fitting established requirements,” a press release issued by the company states.

Using deep neural networks computed on GPUs (graphics processing units), AIVA looks for patterns to try understand the basics of music. The AI practices music by looking at a couple of bars from an existing score and predicting what should come next.

“Eventually, the AI gets good at these predictions and creates a set of mathematical rules to compose its own original scores.”
