The 22-year-old man, identified by The Guardian as Mamoudou Gassama, is seen scaling the balconies on the apartment block in Paris’ 18th district to reach the dangling four-year-old on Saturday evening.

The Guardian reported that Gassama arrived from Mali a few months earlier. He was heralded on Twitter by Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo, who dubbed him the “Spider Man of the 18th”. He has also reportedly been invited by president Emmanuel Macron to the Elysée Palace.

According to France 2 TV, the child’s father left the infant alone to go shopping. The child has been placed into foster care.

UPDATE, 1pm: After their meeting at the Elysée Palace, Emmanuel Macron said that Mamoudou Gassama would be granted French citizenship and enrolled to train as a firefighter with the Paris fire brigade, according to The Local France and Macron’s Twitter feed.
