 Eric Chenal

How did you first get interested in photography, and who inspired you?

I was formerly a graphic designer and worked in an agency and then an insurance company, but I wasn’t finding the work interesting. I needed something that would awaken my senses and creativity. I had an interest in photography and decided to learn more about it on my own and really got up and running with it about a year later. What first inspired me was wedding photography, but to do it in a way that wasn’t cliché.

What was your favourite assignment for Delano, and why?

I had to take three portraits of women [see the April 2017 edition of Delano]. The topic was interior design, and I really enjoyed learning more about these women. I enjoy the contact I have with people and making a connection with them before I photograph them so they can relax a bit and perhaps even have some fun in the process.

What advice would you give someone who is just starting off in photography?

I was lucky to be able to start off with a photographer who has worked in Luxembourg for decades, namely Eric Chenal. He helped me learn a lot in the field, and that’s also indirectly how I began working with Maison Moderne. It was great to have had someone to help me as I got started and to reach the clients I have now.

The advice I would give is that what can be difficult is the initial fear of getting started, but you have to put that fear aside and just go for it.
