Metz mayor François Grosdisier doesn't want French businesses to lose out because of later summer sales: Photo: Romain Gamba

Summer sales in Luxembourg begin on 26 June, followed several days later on 30 June in France.

“If the pandemic knows no borders, then neither do the economy and commerce. On our territory, this is all the more true as we form a pool of life, employment and consumption integrated with Luxembourg, Germany and Belgium,” said Grosdidier in a letter to regional Moselle authorities.

The delay to Luxembourg’s sales would put French shop owners at a disadvantage, he said, with an entire weekend of shopping possible in the grand duchy ahead of France.

Grosdidier has requested a derogation from the regular schedule. For the winter sales, such a request was denied.

The letter was also addressed to Luxembourg’s small and medium-sized business minister, Lex Delles (DP), to keep him informed of the discussions.
