The home of the Schleck brothers, Fränk and Andy, Mondorf-les-Bains seems like the perfect location for a national velodrome.

Originally, plans had been mooted to locate the velodrome at the sports complex in Cessange, but problems with the land there scuppered those plans.

Now, as the national cycling federation celebrated its 100th anniversary in Mondorf, sports minister Romain Schneider confirmed that the velodrome will be built. The sports ministry will contribute 70% of the cost, with the commune of Mondorf taking charge of the project, which incorporates the velodrome into a new sports hall that includes a swimming pool next to a new secondary school in the town.

The cycling federation is being consulted about its requirements for the velodrome. According to a report on RTL, the commune will launch an architectural competition in the next few weeks for the design of the sports complex, and hopes to unveil plans next spring.

Whether the velodrome will attract international competition to Luxembourg remains to be seen.
