The offending motorist was reportedly driving a motorbike on 31 May, 2019, on the CR322, northwest of Vianden, Bausch said responding to a parliamentary question.

Speed cameras were first introduced in Luxembourg in 2016 in a bid to reduce accidents caused by excess speed. Today there are 25 fixed cameras and seven mobile cameras used by the police in strategic locations.

According to the minister, from 1 July 2018 to 31 June 2019, the mobile cameras were taken out on 863 controls, which recorded a total 63,897 speeding offences.

“The preventive nature of mobile speed cameras comes down to their ability to be spontaneously deployed anywhere at any time. Their flexibility allows for quick intervention in speeding or accident hot spots,” the minister wrote, adding: “The increased probability of being caught speeding in any location has a dissuasive effect. In conclusion, both types of speed cameras are complementary.”

In 2018, authorities issued 240,000 tickets based on data gathered by fixed speed cameras, Luxembourg Police told Delano in February 2019.
