Modi on course for victory

Exit polls in India suggest that prime minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata party could win between 287 and 336 seats--well above the 272 seats needed to form government, The Guardian reports. The final results of the six-week elections will be announced on 23 May. But the BBC says analysts have warned exit polls have often been wrong in the past.

Morrison holds on

Incumbent Scott Morrison looks set to win a second term as prime minister of Australia as his coalition has secured a majority government with at least 77 seats, ABC reports. According to the BBC Labor leader Bill Shorten has resigned in the wake of his party's surprise defeat.

Google blocks Huawei access to Android

In a move that Reuters says could hobble Huawei’s smartphone business outside China, Google has suspended business with the Chinese tech company that means it will immediately lose access to updates to the Android operating system. The move by Google is in response to the Trump administration’s blacklisting of Huawei at the end of last week, and is likely to hit Huawei’s European business.

Iran gets warning

Both Donald Trump and the Saudi Arabian regime issued warnings to Iran on Sunday over possible war. “If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran,” Trump tweeted. On Sunday a rocket fired into Baghdad’s “Green Zone” exploded near the U.S. embassy. The Guardian says there is concern that national security adviser, John Bolton, might be nudging the administration towards military action. Reuters reports that Saudi Arabia has warned it is ready to respond with “all strength” to Iranian military aggression.

Swiss vote for tighter gun laws

A referendum in Switzerland on Sunday saw voters agree by a 67-33% margin to comply with stricter European Union gun laws, Euronews reports.

LGBT victory in Taiwan

Taiwan has become the first country in Asia to adopt legislation allowing same-sex marriage. Aljazeera reports. President Tsai Ing-wen tweeted that Taiwan could “show the world that progressive values can take root in an East Asian society.”
