Momzie, a new app which allows mums to find other mums, launches on 4 April in Luxembourg.Photo credit: Momzie

Momzie is a women-only meeting place and a friend search application. Its creator, 30-year-old Hanna Lilja, is not yet a mother herself, but got the idea when talking with her expecting friends, who stressed how important it was to find the support of women in the same situation.

With a background in industrial business, Lilja is not a techie, but she found some friends who helped her develop the app. It was launched in Finland in May 2016 and has now over 10,000 members and has made thousands of connections/matches already, she stated. It’s also being launched in the UK and Sweden.

Lilja told Delano in a phone interview last week:

“I noticed that I am not much of a help to them during the day when I am at work and they are home with the kids. They were a bit lonely during the day and I noticed that they need another mum who is in the same situation, who goes through the same emotions and they would understand each other. It’s actually not that easy to find new mum friends. If you don’t already have friends who have a child at the same time as you do and living in the neighbourhood, it’s not that easy to find new friends.”

She thinks it will work well in Luxembourg because there are so many expats who may find it difficult to find new friends:

“When you come to a new country and you don’t have that safety network that you would have at home. Maybe you don’t know anyone in the country, if you moved to Luxembourg with your husband, and then have a child. You really are in much more need of mum friends.”

The application is free to download and is translated into French and German to support the Luxembourg’s linguistic diversity, but is also available in English.
