Free museum entry, free drinks and discounts at local businesses are among the benefits participants can tap into if they sign up for Biklio from 2-31 October.

Developed in Portugal, the application aims to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce CO2 production through awareness-raising.

“I’m a cyclist. For me, having a small incentive each time I go for a ride is a nice opportunity,” François Sprumont of consultants LuxMobility, which is rolling out the pilot, told Delano.

To benefit, participating cyclists must download the app and hop on their bikes. The app verifies the individual has cycled the required distance by accessing your smartphone’s use accelerometer data. “As soon as you cycle more than 500 metres, you’re eligible,” Luxmobility associate consultant Martin Kracheel said.

Users then click on the benefit they wish to cash in and present the voucher on the application to the venue.

Among partners who have gotten on board are some small businesses in Bonnevoie and Mudam, which will offer free museum entry during the first week, a free coffee thereafter, and a free beer or soft drink during their afterwork event on Wednesday nights. More partners are expected to be announced shortly.

Another handy feature on the Biklio app is that it shows when there are cycling facilities nearby, for example, water fountains and lockers for helmets. “So, it also works as an information tool for cyclists,” Kracheel said.

The app also proposes cycling challenges, participants in which will be entered into a prize draw to win great prizes from bike shop S-Cape at the end of the trial period.

In addition to Luxembourg, the application is also being tested in a handful of other cities in Europe, including Southend in the UK and Breda in the Netherlands.
