Construction firms will be invited to tender for the large project at Place de la Constitution in the autumn, mobility and public works minister François Bausch (Green party) said on Thursday in a joint press conference with the City authority.
The lift forms part of a wider project to improve the area by promoting low-impact mobility like cycling, walking and buses next to the square, where the golden lady war memorial statue stands, and boulevard FD Roosevelt.
Currently, the square has limited parking but in future, it will be a pedestrianised zone. Other planned additions include a tourist office where people can buy tickets and food outlets, to enhance the square’s attractiveness for visitors. Once a contractor is selected, Bausch said that more concrete plans would be presented in the summer of 2020.
Boulevard FD Roosevelt, meanwhile, is currently undergoing a transformation which began in July 2019. The works, which include the creation of two-directional cycle paths, a bus lane and shifting of bus stops, are expected to be completed for 4 November. Among other things, the grass embankment close to the court house complex will be renovated. The government said that any trees displaced by the work will be replanted at the site or in Helfent.
