Petition 1569 calls for the summer holidays to be postponed until September-October, petition 1570 supports the reopening of primary schools, crèches and after school clubs from 25 May provided provision is made for families who may be more vulnerable to coronavirus, and petition 1576 wants a catch up summer school to be offered to learners who fall behind.

Public schools moved classes online from 16 March as part of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The first classes for final year students resumed on 4 May, with the remainder of secondary to return in half class groups from 11 May and primary, crèches, and after school clubs to follow on 25 May. Schools are introducing a raft of coronavirus mitigation measures such as social distancing, regular cleaning of facilities and testing for staff and students, the cancellation of sports classes and closure of canteens.

However, some parents question the safety of the strategy, especially when countries like Italy opted to close their schools until the start of the new school year.

Petition 1550, which went live in April, called for similar measures in Luxembourg. Within its first days it passed the 4,500 signatures required to prompt a parliamentary debate. However, the petition is not expected to close until 4 June, after schools resume, under the currently strategy.

Luxembourg education minister Claude Meisch (DP) was expected to make a statement on the situation at 1pm on Tuesday 5 May.

Anyone may sign a petition, provided they are aged 15 or over and have a social security card in Luxembourg.

If the petitions garner 4,500 signatures or more before they are closed for signing, Luxembourg MPs will debate the subject in parliament.
