Patrick Goldschmidt, a deputy mayor of Luxembourg City, said the cancellation of large public gatherings for the next several months meant “it is not possible” to hold the capital’s annual funfair. Patrick Goldschmidt, a deputy mayor (DP), announced the move during the municipal council meeting on Monday, per Paperjam.

The 3-week event, held from mid-August to early September, typically draws 100,000 people on busy days, which presented too great a virus transmission risk. Goldschmidt noted that Munich had cancelled Oktoberfest, which was scheduled to start in mid-September.

The city will study setting up several smaller sites with rides and food trucks as a potential alternative, stated Goldschmidt.

Other large events in the capital--such as the “grande braderie” street market, set for 2 September, and the Christmas markets--may also be broken up into smaller sites.
