The grand duchy imported 99.708% of its oil and petroleum products in 2017, according to figures released by Eurostat on 28 August. The figure was 100.039% in 2016.

The EU statistics bureau explained:

“Dependency rates above 100% indicate a build-up of oil stocks, while negative dependency rates indicate a net exporting country.”

Across the EU28, the number was 86.7%. The most oil dependent member states were Estonia (115.2%) and Malta (104.2%), while the least dependent were the UK (34.7%) and Denmark (-3.9%).
