However, the figure had already reached 8 organ donations between 1 January and 11 October 2017.

That’s according to a Luxembourg health ministry announcement on Wednesday.

There were 14,533 patients on Eurotransplant’s waiting list as of 1 January of this year, up from 11,244 in 2016. The group facilitated 6,988 organ transplants in 8 EU countries last year.

To mark World Organ Donation Day, on 17 October, the health ministry is participating in the Indoor Cycling Marathon, organised by the NGO Luxembourg Transplant, at Luxexpo on Sunday.

The ministry has previously launched an app, “Passport de Vie” (passport of life), on Android and Apple, which lets residents express their willingness to be an organ donor.

The Passport de Vie card is also available on paper (in English and French).
