Across the EU, 55% of residents aged between 16 and 74 consulted the internet for medical questions, according to 2020 data published by Eurostat. Online health information was most popular in Finland and the Netherlands, where three quarters of people sought health information online.

The lowest shares of people using the internet to look up health issues were observed in Romania (28%), Bulgaria (29%) and Italy (35%).

The EU-wide average of people looking up health information online increased over the past years, from 45% in 2015 to 55% last year.

However, in Luxembourg the number actually decreased over the same time, from 62% to 53%. Eurostat offers no explanation on this phenomenon in its dataset, with the grand duchy the only country where the number of people looking for health information online shrank over time.
