During the process, microorganisms are used in a controlled manner to help transform remains into soil. The process--which Washington is on the cusp of legalising, making it the first US state to do so--is considered a cheaper, greener alternative, as it produces less CO2 than cremation.

Here’s an overview of the other eight petitions which opened for signatures on Friday.

Vehicle concerns

The writer of petition 1281 wants to forbid ads being placed on cars (e.g., under windshield wipers)--in part due to the fact that they can be difficult to remove, but also for environmental reasons.

Another petitioner is also focused on vehicles, this time heavy goods vehicles, requesting in petition 1265 the use of cameras on motorways to enforce the disregard for the overtaking ban.

Monument for monarch

Petition 1286, submitted in the name of the “Comité Alstad”, calls for the erection of a monument in honour of Grand Duke Jean on the Marché-aux-Poissons. The petitioner praises his character, including his optimism, skills in listening and negotiating and open mind.

Focus on family, children

Petition 1284 aims to allow for the self-employed to have access to paternity leave, plus reimbursement, similar to that of any employee. The writer was motivated by the “violation of the constitutional principle that all Luxembourgers are equal before the law”.

Another family-focused petition is petition 1285 which calls on the allowance for leave for sick children, aged 13-18, who are not hospitalised but who may need their health monitored, e.g., for pre- or post-hospitalisation periods.

Also concerning the health of children: the writer of petition 1264 wants to make it a requirement that all children attending children’s communities--crèches, summer camps, schools, etc.--be vaccinated against childhood diseases.

Petition 1270 calls on increasing prison sentencing for pedophiles to life imprisonment, arguing, for example, that a 15-year sentence following the sexual abuse of a child is insufficient.

Sound disturbances

The writer of petition 1259 wants to prohibit noise disruptions caused by pets, i.e., dogs, which can disturb a neighbourhood.

The aforementioned petitions can all be found on the Chamber website and are open for signatures through 27 June. If a petition reaches the required 4,500 signatures, it will be debated in parliament.
