On 26 March, the European Parliament voted to scrap the twice yearly habit of changing the clocks by 2021, leaving national governments to now give their assent. They can choose whether to remain on “permanent summer” or “permanent winter”. Countries have until next year to decide.

In an online consultation, the French voted for a permanent summer time scheme all-year round.

Responding to a parliamentary question in April, prime minister Xavier Bettel wrote that Luxembourg would consult first with neighbours and partners before reaching a decision.

The author of petition 1269 wants this decision to be made by Luxembourg’s permanent residents, regardless of their nationality.

7 petitions

It is one of seven online petition which opened for signature on Friday morning.

Petition 1262 asks for tap water to be made freely available in bars and restaurants in Luxembourg, petition 1214 calls for a ban on smoking in all public places in Luxembourg, petition 1256 calls for overtime to be taken into account when calculating time spent working, enabling those with enough overtime to retire earlier than they normally would.

Junk mail was the focus of two new petitions: petition 1271 calls for an end to adverts being sent to letter boxes, while petition 1273 asks communes and local associations to stop sharing information via post for environmental reasons. Finally, petition 1192 calls for all trade unions to be represented nationally and have powers to write collective working agreements.

Petitions with 4,500 signatures or more will be debated in parliament. Anyone may sign a petition in Luxembourg provided they are aged 15 or over and have a social security card for Luxembourg.
