Responding to a parliamentary question published on Thursday, transport minister François Bausch said that the technology, which enables electric bike users to recharge the bikes’ batteries, would cost €1,800 per m2.

He explained that the cost of equipping a 100-metre cycle path that is 3 metres wide would rise to €540,000.

“Considering the price of solar panels for roof installations and the fact they are 20% more efficient than those used on bike paths”, the minister said no such project was envisaged in the near future.

In May this year, the City announced plans to replace a third of its vel'oh! public bike rental fleet with electric bikes. The system of electric bike charging cycle paths, which is currently being tested in the Netherlands, could have been a complement to this shift.

In another mobility-related parliamentary question, the response to which was published on Thursday, Bausch said that the Cita information system, which is in charge of managing traffic, incidents and tunnel safety on the country’s motorway, would be upgraded.

He said that given the shift towards autonomous driving, such an information system remained relevant. No timeline or budget regarding the upgrade was provided.
