Whereas health Minister Paulette Lenert (LSAP), during a press conference on Wednesday, did not see the necessity for further restrictions just yet, pages seem to have turned since, especially considering Thursday’s uptick of 214 new infections from 5,938 tests.

Addressing this rapid increase, the prime minister did admit ‘’we are worried about the new infection numbers. I will call a Government Council meeting in the next few days.’’ He also indicated that an exchange with the health minister and other experts to discuss the situation was planned at some point on Friday. Asked about the possibility of new restrictions, Bettel said that ‘’we have to see once we have a clear analysis of the situation’’ but that if numbers kept following this upward trend ‘’it is necessary to react.’’ 

This comes only hours after the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) named Luxembourg as a high risk zone on its colour-coded map and only a few days after neighbours in France, Belgium and the Netherlands had already reinforced restrictions with bar closures and curfews.
