After a 20-year block, registration has opened for one- and two-digit domain names that end with .lu.
The Restena Foundation, which manages the .lu domain name system, said in a press release on 3 September:
“Spread over a period of 15 weeks, the introduction of more than 2,800 possibilities of new .lu registrations represents a unique opportunity to get a .lu domain name and to address the Luxembourg market with a familiar label, associate the identity of Luxembourg with a business beyond national borders, identify the Luxembourgish origin of goods and services, or even, to a greater extent, show an attachment to the Grand Duchy.”
The outfit said two-digit .lu web addresses were available until the early 2000s but were suspended for software and security reasons.
The new allocations will take place under a three-phase process, Restena stated. The first stage, which began on 31 August and runs to 30 October, is reserved for holders of registered trademarks.
The second phase, which runs between 2 November and 14 December, will take place via a series of online auctions.
Then on 15 December, one- and two-digit domain names will be made “generally available” through the current domain name registration process.
