The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, which took effect in May 2018, “led to a significant increase in inquiries,” according to the National Commission for Data Protection (CNPD)’s 2018 annual report, released on 18 September.

“The CNPD received 1,112 written requests for information in 2018, more than double the amount received in 2017 (528 requests),” concerning GDPR, video surveillance and other matters, the agency stated.

The number of formal complaints lodged at the CNPD “increased greatly compared to the previous year, from 200 in 2017 to 450 in 2018.”

The CNPD also reported that it conducted “25 audit procedures” and “12 onsite investigations” in 2018, both new tasks for the outfit.

Organisations covered by GDPR self-reported 172 data breaches to the CNPD last year, with the commission stating: “The main cause of these violations was human error.”
