Clemency saw temperatures rise to 25.4°C on Wednesday, followed closely by Oberkorn (25.3°C), Remerschen (25.2°C) and Remich (25°C).

Analysing data from 32 weather stations across the country revealed 31 March to have been the hottest March day since they began recording temperatures in 1838.

The previous hottest day was on 30 March 1949 when 24°C was measured in Echternach.

Much of northwest Europe has been seeing a mini heatwave and unusually warm temperatures for this time of year. Meteolux predicts temperatures of up to 22°C for 1 April, but weather is then expected to cool off heading into next week, with some rain on the horizon.

The water management administration earlier this year said Luxembourg risked facing water shortages in the summer because of insufficient rainfall.

2020 was the hottest year on record in Luxembourg, since weather reporting began at the meteorological station in Findel. And while it was not the driest, it was marked by a “significant rainfall deficit,” according to Meteolux, the seventh year with too little rain in a row.
