The majority of Democratic voters in Luxembourg supported Sanders; the US senator from Vermont received 54% of the grand duchy’s vote (44 out of the 81 total ballots cast), according to figures from Democrats Abroad, the party’s overseas branch.

The former US vice president Joe Biden came in second place, with 30% of the vote (24 out 81 ballots cast).

Elizabeth Warren, a US senator from Massachusetts, received 12% and Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, garnered 4% of the vote in Luxembourg. Both Warren and Buttigieg have subsequently withdrawn from the race.

Worldwide, Sanders received 58% of the Democrats Abroad vote, giving him 9 delegates for the party’s national convention, and Biden earned 23% of the vote, yielding 4 delegates.

Democrats Abroad will send 21 out of the 3,979 total delegates to the Democratic party convention which is scheduled to take place in July.

Altogether, 39,984 Americans in 180 countries and territories cast ballots in the overseas election. The group said: “Countries with the highest total turnout included the UK (5,689), Germany (5,268), Canada (4,691), France (3,017), and Mexico (1,504).”

The Democrats Abroad primary poll took place 3-10 March and the results were announced on 23 March.
