Written and directed by Ari Folman, “Where is Anne Frank” follows the journey of Kitty--Anne’s imaginary friend in her famous diary--who comes to life in the present day in the family’s Prinsengracht house in Amsterdam. Believing that Anne is still alive, Kitty begins her search for her friend.

“Where is Anne Frank” will be screened for its world premiere out of competition at the Cannes festival, which takes place between 6 and 17 July. The film is a co-production between Belgium, Luxembourg, Israel, the Netherlands and France.

Large parts of the animation work were done in Luxembourg by Doghouse Films, combining traditional 2D animation and stop-motion. Luxembourg-based sound engineer Michel Schillings also worked on the film.

Samsa Film and director Ari Folman previously worked together on his 2013 film “The Congress”, which featured voice acting by Hollywood stars including Robin Wright, Jon Hamm and Paul Giamatti.

“The Congress”, too, premiered at Cannes and won the European Film Award for best animated feature in 2013.

“Where is Anne Frank” is set for cinema release in November this year.

The films joins “The Restless”, another Luxembourg co-production screening at Cannes this year. Directed by Belgian filmmaker Joachim Lafosse, the drama about bipolar disorder is one of 24 movies in competition at the festival.
