Luxembourg closed the renewable energy ranking together with Hungary and Cyprus. Only Malta consumed less renewable energy, which made up just 8% of overall consumption.

This compares to leader Austria, where 75% of all electricity came from renewable sources, with Sweden (71%), Denmark (65%), Portugal (54%) and Latvia (53%) also in the top five.

The EU average was at around 35%.

Wind energy and hydroelectric power each made up 35% of electricity gained from renewable sources in the EU, Eurostat said, followed by solar energy (13%) and solid biofuels (8%).
