Habscheid suffers from a congenital femoral deficiency which means he walks with a prosthetic foot.

The 33-year-old’s performance in the world championships saw him throw the put 15.10 metres, shattering his own world record and securing him a place in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Gold went to Briton Aled Davies.

"Luxembourg is proud to have a champion of your caliber in its ranks,” Luxembourg sports minister Dan Kersch wrote in an open letter published on Monday.

In July 2019, Habscheid won both discus and shot put in Bydgoszcz, Poland, a Grand Prix Paralympics series. The Luxembourger beat the year’s best distance for discus, throwing 45.78 metres.
