Police detected 1,200 breaches of the rules on group gatherings and restaurant closures from 18 March to 7 April, a police spokesperson confirmed via email.
The spokesperson would not say whether all breaches resulted in fines being issued, or what proportion were related to gatherings with non-household members or illegal business openings.
Under emergency measures to curb the spread of coronavirus in Luxembourg, people who breach social distancing measures by gathering with other people not from their household can be fined €145, a fee that doubles for repeat offences.
Businesses not deeemed "essential" can be fined €4,000 for a first breach and €8,000 for repeat offences.
The spokesperson said that police had carried out 3,200 checks since 18 March and would continue to carry out checks.
