Deep in the depths of winter, escape to Cape Verde for year-round sun and water sports fun. We take a tour of the archipelago’s most developed island, Sal – it may be small in size, but it sure is mighty in wind and wave power! Surfers and windsurfers are lured from all over the world thanks to the island’s ideal conditions: warm waters, guaranteed sun, no crowds and wonderful waves!
Sal is one of the 10 volcanic islands that make up the Cape Verde archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, around 570km off the coast of Senegal. January and February are the windiest months, so now is the ideal time to get planning a water sports trip to the island. There are plenty of surf spots for both beginners and more advanced surfers, and if you find yourself in the latter camp, the island boasts numerous surf schools and rental shops, like Surf Cabo Verde in Santa Maria. While you’re there, set up camp at Robinson Club Cabo Verde, a hotel that oozes modern luxury and has quirky decorative touches, like surfboards that line the lounge walls. Expect sweeping ocean views, luminous bedrooms and leisure facilities galore – they even have their own water sports station with instructors and equipment too!
Thanks to dominant north-easterly trade winds and consistent north-westerly swells, Sal’s shores harbour some of the best waves in the Atlantic Ocean, with some swells reaching up to 8ft high! But don’t let this intimidate you, there is something for everyone: Santa Maria’s stunning 3km-long beach is home to beginner-friendly waves; Ponta do Sinó is also on the south coast and has consistent waves for all levels; meanwhile, Palmeira in the north west is ideal for more seasoned surfers.
The winds also mean you can dabble in a whole host of other sports like windsurfing or kite surfing. For something a little gentler, Atlantic Star also offer the chance to experience the crystalline waters by paddle board or kayak, or even go diving in the shipwreck-strewn waters. For an added extra, Luxair even run a half-day catamaran tour with No Limits Adventure. Roaming the south-west waters and Murdeira bay, come for snorkelling, fishing or simply lazing about. Don’t forget, in February you’re likely to catch a glimpse of whales!
