The public has been warned to avoid direct contact with the water at the lac de la haute Sûre Benjamin Champenois/archives

The water management administration (Administration de la gestion de l’eau) has issued recommendations on staying away from the water in the lake.

On Tuesday 17 October, it stated that analyses at several places indicated that toxic cyanobacteria were present in high concentration and could cause health problems for humans and animals. These “blue algae” had already been noticed in mid-August near the beach “Rommwiss”.

Any nautical activity is therefore forbidden anywhere on Upper Sûre Lake.

The public is advised to:

  • Avoid any direct contact with the water at the lake (through swimming, aquatic sports, and fishing)
  • Not let dogs or other pets drink the water of the lake
  • Not eat fish caught in the lake

If you experience any health issues after a swim, contact your doctor and mention that you possibly came into contact with toxic cyanobacteria.

The administration said that water treated by Sebes, the main drinking water provider in Luxembourg, is still safe to drink, as that water is taken deep down, where concentration levels of blue algae is very low.
