The fifteen-year-old became the youngest WTA singles champion in 15 years when she beat the 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 on Sunday.
The New York Times described the win as the “capstone of a year in which she soared more than 800 places up the rankings and had start-making runs”.
On Tuesday, she’ll play 66th ranked Anna Blinkova at the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open, her last tournament of the season. She secured a place after world number 137 Maria Sharapova bowed out of the tournament because of a shoulder injury.
Another last-minute cancellation came from Germany’s Angelique Kerber, a former world number 1, who is suffering a leg injury. Seventeen-year-old US player Caty McNally, who regularly plays doubles with Kerber, occupies the second place freed up in the tournament.
