The Grand Duchy’s national touch rugby team heads to the European championships this week.
More than half of the current 15-man Luxembourg Touch team are under age 20, according to the club.
“Having so many young talented players bodes well for the future,” Paul Sweetnam, the team manager, said in a media release. “This is a great opportunity for them to develop their skills at the very highest level of our sport”.
The squad placed 6th two years ago. This year’s competition, held in Jersey, starts Thursday 7 July and runs through Sunday 10 July.
Last week, the Brown Brothers Harriman team won the Luxembourg Corporate Touch Tournament. BBH beat out the ÉireLux squad in the finale, played on Wednesday 29 June. Ten other teams also participated in the eight week season.
According to Luxembourg Touch: “each team must have two women on the pitch at any time, and it is obligatory to stay after the game for a pitch-side BBQ and beers.”
The club explained that: “Touch is a non contact variant of rugby, which makes it a great social sport. Over 100 players participated in this year’s competition, with ages ranging from 14 to 55, of whom 30% were ladies.”
