Official government communication predicted the opening of the tram line serving Cloche d’Or in 2020/2021. That goal is unlikely to be reached due to the need for new infrastructure in and around Luxembourg City.

While the plans for the tram’s route covering 16 kilometers from the airport to the new stadium have not changed, the timeline has. Robert Biel, the Highway Department’s director of the division for new construction, told Paperjam that he does not expect the completion of the new tram line before 2023.

The reason for this delay is the construction of the new N3 trunk road, which will connect Bonnevoie to the Ban de Gasprich. Roadworks start at the beginning of 2019.

The news contradicts the claim in 2016 by the Green minister for sustainability and infrastructure, François Bausch, that roadworks would not slow down the development of the tram line.

Biel stated this week that train and car traffic would not be halted while construction continued. He said that only half of area roads will be closed at a time at alternating intervals.
