The results were published by statistics agency Statec and show that in 2016 people had three breaks of on average seven days per year. There was marked change in habits compared to 1997 when the survey was first conducted when respondents said they took two holidays per year averaging 10 days each time.

In 2016, eight in ten residents said they travelled for their holidays, compared to just under seven in 10 (66%) in 1997. Meanwhile, senior citizens’ holiday habits also appear to have changed. According to Statec, in 1995, five in 10 pensioners travelled, compared with two thirds (66%) in 2016.

The most popular tourist destinations of Luxembourg respondents in 2016 were France, Germany and Spain. In 1997, the top three destinations were France, Spain and Belgium.
