Speaking during the afternoon under clear blue skies, Bettel said: “This day should also be an opportunity for the younger generations to learn more about our common history and to learn lessons of humanity and tolerance from the experiences of their parents and grandparents. Freedom and democracy are values that require the continued commitment of all. This will be the most appropriate way to honour the memory of all these victims.”

The cemetery, located in Luxembourg-Hamm, was dedicated in 1960 and is the last resting place of some 5,073 American war dead, including General George S Patton who, by leading the US Third Army in Luxembourg, helped to liberate the country.

A further 371 people reported missing in action are remembered at the site where their names are inscribed on the giant tablets at the head of the cemetery.

Lieutenant General Steven L Basham, Deputy Commander in the US Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, also gave a brief speech at the commemoration.
