The tourism sector has seen an increase in locals holidaying in the grand duchy thanks to the €50 hotel vouchers scheme.
Although fewer than 5% of the €50 vouchers have so far been redeemed, Luxembourg for Tourism says that hotels and campsites saw unprecedented numbers of Luxembourg residents overnight at their establishment. By the end of August, 34,000 vouchers had been used at 234 Luxembourg establishments--62% of hotels and 86% of campsites said that locals had spent a night.
A total of 730,000 vouchers were distributed to encourage residents to spend their “Vakanz doheem” (holiday at home). The tourism sector has suffered a significant drop in numbers during the pandemic, with hotels in the grand duchy registering just 5,871 overnight stays in June compared to 15,093 for the same month in 2019.
