As Bulgaria’s third largest city, Varna is a jewel on the Black Sea coast crown. It’s got beaches, it’s got lush woodlands and it’s got historic hotspots, ticking all the boxes for a varied summer vacation. One of the most popular seaside spots is Golden Sands (Zlatni pyasatsi) resort, a mere 17km from the city centre. The 4km-long beach has all the classics: fine golden sand, water sports a plenty and lots of family-friendly facilities. The Golden Sands Natural Park flanks the coastline, offering lush landscapes cascading from the Franga Plateau, numerous walking trail possibilities and even four sources of hot mineral water springs. Nearby you’ll also find the medieval Aladzha Monastery, a 40-metre cave monastery complex carved into the limestone rock where monks once lived in the 13th to 15th centuries.

Bulgaria’s beautiful Black Sea coastline stretches 370km-long, a third of which is made up of beaches. If you’re looking for a quieter, more laid-back alternative to Golden Sands, head a little further north to the small seaside town of Balchik and its beautiful botanical gardens, or the seaside resort in Obzor, 60km south of Varna. But before you go, do make sure to check out historical Varna and its ancient Roman Thermae baths and the luxurious cathedral too!
