With much of Luxembourg teleworking as part of the covid-19 clampdown, Delano is speaking with our readers about their telecommuting workspace and how they are making the virtual office environment work for them.
Herminie de Beauregard, corporate communications manager at Amazon in Luxembourg, shared her home office with Delano on Tuesday.
AG: Prior to the covid-19 restrictions, did you already telecommute and, if so, how often?
HdB: Despite the flexibility my company offers, in normal circumstances, I’m not the biggest fan of working from home for a few reasons. Being a mother of 3 kids, working from home can be challenging especially when the kids get out of school early certain days of the week. Then I like to have a dedicated work environment and connect to my colleagues.
When did you start telecommuting as a covid-19 precaution?
I started telecommuting about 10 days ago when the company recommended globally that all employees who work in a role that can be done from home, do so through the end of the month.
What was your telecommuting workspace previously?
When working from home, I usually set up my computer on the living room table. With the kids being at home, I stole my eldest son’s desk and got installed in his room. I try to be fair alternating my kids’ rooms.
What do you like about your telecommuting workspace?
I like hearing the nature around me as the room overlooks the garden. It’s a nice environment especially as Spring just started!
Is there a “personal touch” to your home workspace?
I like the piece of Lego castle my boy put together. It reminds me of the efforts one has to make to deliver results achieving a goal. We have to work hard to get there.
What are your most widely used telecommuting tools or applications?
I really enjoy using Chime app when having team calls or just one-on-one. Luckily the connection is great so far and we can talk while seeing each of us as if we were in one same room. Technology has no limit! We also use Chime messaging, Amazon’s own videoconferencing and messaging app to share fun videos or photos to keep in touch with colleagues.
How do you make telecommuting work for you?
I keep regular contacts with my colleagues I miss in the workplace via Chime. The tools we use while telecommuting help us move forward on the projects.
Have you developed any new habits or routines?
I like to follow a clear schedule with a starting and end time to my work days. I also like to indulge myself to take an end of the day run to let off steam.
After the covid-19 restrictions are lifted, do you plan to keep telecommuting sometimes?
I will certainly keep working from home a day or two per week. I like being able to use the flexibility my employer offers, take some breaks with the kids and re-connect in the evening to finish my workload.
