The question of the month by TNS Ilres polled 508 people aged 18 and over about what they would do if they won €1 million.

Almost a third said they would use it to buy property or as a deposit. Meanwhile one in five would pay off a loan and 17% said they would share the windfall with family or friends.

Answers depended largely on the age of the person polled—repaying a loan was the first option for 44% of people aged 25 and 34, suggesting a certain level of debt in this group.

Most of the over 55s surveyed, meanwhile, said they would share their prize to secure the financial future of their loved ones.

Investing in shares and bonds was popular among one in ten respondents, while holidays were the priority of 6% overall and one in five of 18 to 24-year-olds.

Just 4% of respondents showed an altruistic side saying they would make a charitable donation, while 3% wanted to move abroad, 2% would buy a new car and 1% would have a big party.
