Ray Liotta Masterclass

Get to know more about actor Ray Liotta, who is a special guest and subject of a short retrospective at this year’s festival. Luxembourg-based film critic Boyd van Hoeij from The Hollywood Reporter will talk with Liotta about his career, which includes early roles such as that of the crazy ex-husband of Melanie Griffith in Jonathan Demme’s comedy “Something Wild”, and then as the elegant Shoeless Joe Jackson in “Field of Dreams”, and his charismatic star-making performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas”.

The event is sold-out, but there may be some return tickets available at the Cinémathèque this evening.

Luxembourg short films

A tradition at the festival, the screening of a selection of new short films by Luxembourg film makers and production companies often proves to be a mixed bag of the good, bad and indifferent. This year’s choice is no different.

The Challenge

Yuri Ancarani’s documentary about Arabs who still practice the art of falconry focuses on an intense weekend in the Qatari desert where a tournament takes place. The film is preceded by a screening of Ancarani’s “San Siro”, an epic experimental anatomy of the iconic football stadium in Milan. The event is in conjunction with Casino Luxembourg - Forum d'Art Contemporain and features an introduction by curator Emanuela Mazzonis.

The Lost City of Z

James Gray’s adventure film stars Charlie Hunnam as British explorer Percy Fawcett who in the early 20th century set out to find a hidden civilization in the Amazon. Sienna Miller and Robert Pattinson co-star. The ever-reliable Todd McCarthy in The Hollywood Reporter says that the film is “a rare piece of contemporary classical cinema” and praises Gray’s methodical storytelling. It is an “immaculate production” says McCarthy.

Glory

Bulgarian film makers Tzanko Petrov in Kristina Grozeva won the Grand Prix at the festival two years ago with their film “The Lesson”. They return with “Glory”, a political drama that again focuses on the tragedy of the everyday as ordinary people struggle to do the right thing and find dignity in adversity. It stars Stefan Denolyubov as a railway worker who find a large sum of money and hands it in to the authorities. He is portrayed for political purposes as a hero by manipulative ministry PR chief, played by Margita Gosheva (the star of “The Lesson”) and then things get out of hand.

Stefan Denolyubov and script-writer Decho Taralezhkov will both be at the screening.

Rahul Jain’s documentary explores the day-to-day running of a gigantic textile factory in Gujarat, India. Sundance Film Festival called it “a visceral, intensely cinematic experience, Machines explores the intertwining of worker and machine, labor and commodity, and humanity and industrialization.”
