“Hosted by our Senior Section Players, Scott Browne and Ben Jarvis, over 90 members enjoyed a fun packed evening of good food and wine, shared stories and anecdotes of the season, Tombola prizes and plenty of dancing,” RCL’s Martyn Edwards told Delano following the event.
Two awards were given during the soirée on Saturday:
Scott Browne was presented with the Seniors Player of the Year Award
Richard Marsden was presented with the Most Improved Player of the Year Award
The gala capped RCL’s 45th season.
Its senior section plays in the German leagues. “We had 90 players in total registered to play in Germany last season,” Edwards said on Monday, summarising comments made by the club’s president, Fred Gabriel, at the ball.
RCL’s first team played in the Bundesliga BL2 West section, and its second team played in the Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW) regional league. RCL’s “1st team came top in BL2 West and are now promoted into Bundesliga 1 Sud/West,” stated Edwards.
The “2nd team came top of their table too, but we won’t go up due to losing in the playoffs against three other regional leagues.” That means the second team will remain in the NRW regional league next season.
“However we expect to have even more players next year, so we may be able to have a 3rd team to play friendlies. This gives us plenty of scope to offer all level abilities at senior rugby, so anyone who wishes to join us and play, all abilities and experience are welcome.”
RCL juniors play in the Belgian league. This season the Under-18s maintained their place in division 1 level “and also provide a large contribution of players for our national side,” said Edwards. The U16s remained in division two and “U14s moved from near bottom of division 3 to almost top in division 2.”
The club also organises several youth training events throughout the year, he noted.
Rugby Club Luxembourg is the oldest and largest rugby club in the grand duchy, according to RCL. “Our goal is to promote what we truly believe to be the greatest of team sports and its core values of honesty, integrity, hard work and respect, both for your teammates and opponents,” the group has stated. “RCL actively nurtures the development of the game in the Grand Duchy and via its players, the success of the national team.”
