Lecture on consumerism

View of the Post-Capital: Art and the Economics of the Digital Age exhibition Mudam Luxembourg

View of the Post-Capital: Art and the Economics of the Digital Age exhibition Mudam Luxembourg

Yves Citton, professor in literature and media at the Université Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint Denis and director of the EUR ArTeC, will speak about consumption and capitalism in a lecture linked to Mudam’s Post-Capital: Art and the Economics of the Digital Age exhibition.

Titled, Surviving Exhaustion? Capitalist Self-Consumption and Collapsonaut Attention, the lecture will briefly sketch a contrast between (capitalist) “extractivist attention” and (post-capitalist?) “collapsonaut attention” and the need to understand their complementarity as much as their opposition. Citton will argue that “another attention ecology is possible”, and that it is already taking shape, “but we should be aware of its limits as much as of its promises.”

The exhibition, one of the most expansive at Mudam for many years, ends on 16 January. Catch it while you can. Here’s a preview with curator Michelle Cotton.
