Russian artist and Putin critic Maxim Kantor is showing more than 60 works at MNHA, including one created specifically for the exhibition, with visitors invited to donate to the Red Cross as the entry fee is waived.

The MNHA normally charges a fee for its temporary exhibitions but entry to Maxim Kantor’s exhibition is free, with visitors encouraged to make a donation to the Red Cross to support its work in Ukraine and with refugees in Luxembourg.

Already before Russia invaded Ukraine, the museum was in contact with Kantor. They quickly agreed to put together an exhibition in solidarity with Ukraine. Kantor’s works aim to unmask the aggressive and totalitarian character of the regime under president Vladimir Putin.

The LUkraine association in an open letter criticised Kantor, who had compared the suffering of Russians under Putin to that of victims of war in Ukraine.

The museum says it wanted to “show a sign of solidarity with those under attack when direct cooperation with a Ukrainian museum is currently proving impossible.”
