Esch2022 is bringing traditional Egyptian healing ritual music to Luxembourg’s second city.

The Mazaher ensemble wishes to enshrine contemporary musical creations in their ancestors’ traditions. Zar is a community healing ritual of drumming and dancing, poly-rhythmic songs and chants that has been interpreted as an exorcism of evil spirits in the past. 

Mazaher is one of the last remaining Zar practitioners in Egypt and one of the rare ensembles in which women play a leading role.

This unique spectacle brings together on stage the sound of ancient instruments from the Pharaonic era, flutes, citterns and drums, and the sound of modern, bass and saxophone, joining Gypsy music from the Nile delta with Zar songs.
