Oscar-nominated documentary Writing with Fire tells the story of a group of Dalit women in India who found a newspaper to report on injustices in their communities.

The Dalit under India’s caste system are also known as untouchables. But the women of newspaper Khabar Lahariya defy society’s rules and conventions. Chief reporter Meera leads a newsroom while dealing with her husband’s complaints at home. Crime reporter Suneeta on the other hand is being pushed into marriage by her family, which will most certainly put an end to her career.

On top of their personal struggles, the film shows the risks of investigative journalism in India, a country with one of the highest death tallies of reporters worldwide. And the women must adopt digital technologies to move with the times and attract new audiences online and on social media.

Writing with Fire is an inspiring tribute to women and journalism.

The screening is followed by an interview and discussion with the film’s directors, Rintu Thomas and Sushit Ghosh.

The event is free but advance registration is recommended. For more details, visit
