His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri is the eldest son of the 5 children of Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte. On February 14, 1981, the Crown Prince married Maria Teresa Mestre at the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Luxembourg. From their union, five children were born: Prince Guillaume, Prince Félix, Prince Louis, Princess Alexandra, and Prince Sébastien. Since October 7, 2000, he has been the head of state of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Education and Distinctions
Prince Henri completed his secondary education in Luxembourg and France, where he successfully passed his baccalaureate in 1974. He continued his education at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Great Britain, where he obtained the rank of officer in 1975.

Prince Henri then enrolled at the Graduate Institute of International Studies (HEI) in Geneva, Switzerland, and obtained a Bachelor's degree in Political Science in 1980. It was at university that Prince Henri met Maria Teresa Mestre, his future wife. In 1989, he was appointed Honorary Major of the Parachute Regiment in the United Kingdom. This was followed by numerous informational and educational stays abroad, particularly in the United States and Japan.

As Crown Prince, Prince Henri automatically sat on the State Council, which allowed him to deepen his knowledge of the institutional and legislative mechanisms of the country between 1980 and 1998.

From 1978 to 2000, Prince Henri served as Honorary President of the Economic Development Committee. In this capacity, the Prince undertook numerous prospecting trips on five continents to promote the image of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. He actively contributed to conquering new foreign markets and attracting many investments to Luxembourg. This official function was taken over by his son, Prince Guillaume, in 2000. However, the Grand Duke continues to be actively involved in promoting his country, particularly through state visits.

Accession to the Throne
On March 4, 1998, the Crown Prince was appointed Lieutenant Representative of His Royal Highness Grand Duke Jean, a function that gave him delegated powers in certain areas after swearing to observe the constitution. He had prepared for this along his path as Crown Prince.

Subsequently, Grand Duke Jean, at the age of 79, decided to abdicate after 35 years of reign and passed the throne to his eldest son. The swearing-in ceremony took place on October 7, 2000, in the Chamber of Deputies, where Grand Duke Henri took the oath prescribed by Article 5 of the Constitution: "I swear to observe the Constitution and the laws of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, to maintain national independence and the territorial integrity as well as public and individual freedoms." In his enthronement speech, His Royal Highness the Grand Duke addressed the deep values of our society and reminded that the "foundations of our civilization are named solidarity, justice, tolerance, respect for others, and humanity."

The first courtesy visits of Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess took them in the days following the swearing-in to France (October 9–10, 2000) and to the Federal Republic of Germany (October 11–12, 2000), thus emphasizing the vital links with the two neighboring countries. From April 2001 to June 2002, the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess made their Joyous Entries into the 12 cantons of Luxembourg.

Function and Activities of the Grand Duke
In the exercise of his constitutional mission as Head of State, the Grand Duke regularly receives members of the government and meets foreign ambassadors for the presentation of credentials and farewell audiences. His Royal Highness the Grand Duke maintains regular contact with the vital forces of the nation, such as personalities from the political, economic, social, scientific, cultural, and sports worlds.

Contact with Luxembourgers is the order of the day in the daily life of the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess. In addition to these meetings, Grand Duke Henri informs himself about all aspects of life in Luxembourg by visiting numerous institutions, associations, and exhibitions. He participates in concerts, academic sessions, and sports events. In the economic field, the Grand Duke regularly visits companies throughout the country, visits during which he is often accompanied by his Crown Prince.

In the social, humanitarian, and public health sectors, the Grand Duke is often accompanied by the Grand Duchess during his numerous visits, particularly to hospitals and health facilities.

Another aspect of the Grand Duke's representative function concerns state visits and official visits, which allow the Head of State to establish or strengthen ties with other countries. During a state visit to Luxembourg, traditional steps include laying a wreath at the National Monument of Luxembourg Solidarity, an official reception with speeches, and meetings in political and economic fields.

Her Royal Highness the Grand Duchess supports the Grand Duke in the exercise of his functions, not only by accompanying him to official activities such as state visits but also in everyday life.

The role of His Royal Highness the Grand Duke in forming the government is defined by the Constitution. Following parliamentary elections and according to established practices, the Grand Duke chooses the Prime Minister, either after first appointing an informant or by directly appointing a formator. The Prime Minister, in turn, takes care to form a government that will receive the approval of the parliamentary majority.

In his speeches, the Head of State constantly emphasizes and recalls the values that define the Luxembourgish character: those of tolerance, respect, dignity, and solidarity.

In his traditional Christmas speech, broadcast on Christmas Eve, the Grand Duke addresses the population residing in the Grand Duchy. He reviews the past year, highlighting national concerns of the moment as well as specific themes related to integration and living together.

The Grand Duke also addresses the vital forces of the nation as part of the festivities of the National Day.

In particularly difficult situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic crisis in 2020, the Grand Duke can address the population to convey messages of encouragement.

Since his accession to the throne, the Grand Duke has held the title of General of the Luxembourg Army.

High Patronages and Special Interests
In addition to his official and protocol activities, the Grand Duke supports and assumes the patronage of numerous associations active in the cultural, sports, scientific, ecological, and social fields. He is interested in technological advances, whether in medicine, the circular economy, or mobility. Sustainable development and the fight against climate change are particularly close to his heart.

The Grand Duke is a member of the board of directors of the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess Foundation, whose President is the Grand Duchess, and which is dedicated to integrating people in distress and with specific needs into Luxembourgish society. The Foundation also supports international projects in Africa and Asia.

At the same time, Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess assume the high patronage of numerous associations in Luxembourg, and members of the Grand Ducal family often grant their High Patronage to specific events.

Internationally, the Grand Duke is President of the Galápagos Darwin Trust Luxembourg and an honorary member of the General Assembly of the Charles Darwin Foundation. This non-governmental organization aims to conserve the environment and biodiversity in the Galápagos Islands.

The Grand Duke is also a member of the Mentor Foundation, founded by Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden. The goal of the Foundation, which is under the patronage of the World Health Organization (WHO), is the prevention of drug use by adolescents.

In 1998, the Grand Duke joined the International Olympic Committee (IOC). If his schedule allows, he attends meetings of the IOC members and, since 1999, he is also a member of the Olympic Solidarity Commission. Promoting Olympic values is very important to him, and the Grand Duke has attended almost all Summer and Winter Olympics to support Luxembourgish athletes.

Grand Duke Henri combines his family life with the demands of his role as Head of State. Grand Duke Henri has five children from his marriage to Grand Duchess Maria Teresa and is a grandfather of six grandchildren. In 2010, the Grand Duke decided to amend the Family Pact of the House of Nassau to introduce absolute primogeniture, thus guaranteeing equality between men and women in succession to the throne."

De 1978 à 2000, le Prince Henri exerce la fonction de Président d’honneur du Comité de développement économique. Le 4 mars 1998, le Grand-Duc héritier est nommé Lieutenant-Représentant de Son Altesse Royale le Grand-Duc Jean, fonction qui lui attribue une délégation de pouvoir dans certains domaines après avoir prêté le serment d’observer la constitution. Il s’y est préparé le long de son parcours en tant que Grand-Duc héritier.

Sur le plan économique, le Grand-Duc visite régulièrement des entreprises à travers tout le pays, visites lors desquelles il se fait souvent épauler par son Altesse Royale le Grand-Duc héritier.

Dans le secteur social, humanitaire et de la santé publique, le Grand-Duc est souvent accompagné par la Grande-Duchesse lors de ses nombreuses visites, notamment dans les hôpitaux et les maisons de santé.

Un autre aspect de la fonction représentative du Grand-Duc concerne les visites d’Etat et les visites officielles, qui permettent au Chef d’Etat de nouer ou de renforcer les liens avec d’autres pays. Lors d’une visite d’Etat au Luxembourg, les étapes traditionnelles incluent le dépôt d’une gerbe devant le Monument national de la Solidarité luxembourgeoise, une réception officielle avec discours, et des rendez-vous dans les domaines politique et économique.

Dans ses discours, le Chef de l’Etat n’a de cesse de souligner et de rappeler les valeurs qui définissent le caractère luxembourgeois : celles de la tolérance, du respect, de la dignité et de la solidarité.

Dans le traditionnel discours de Noël, diffusé le soir du Réveillon, le Grand-Duc s’adresse à la population résidant au Grand-Duché. Il passe en revue l’année écoulée en relevant les préoccupations nationales du moment ainsi que des thèmes spécifiques liés à l’intégration et au vivre ensemble.

Le Grand-Duc s’adresse également aux forces vives de la nation dans le cadre des festivités de la fête nationale.

Dans des situations particulièrement difficiles, telle la crise de la pandémie COVID-19 en 2020, le Grand-Duc peut s’adresser à la population pour passer des messages d’encouragement.

Haut Patronages et intérêts particuliers

La Fondation soutient également des projets internationaux en Afrique et en Asie.

En même temps, Leurs Altesses Royales le Grand-Duc et la Grande-Duchesse assument le haut patronage de nombreuses associations au Luxembourg et les membres de la famille grand-ducale accordent souvent leur Haut Patronage à des évènements ponctuels.

Au niveau international, le Grand-Duc est Président du Galápagos Darwin Trust Luxembourg et membre honoraire de l’Assemblée générale de la Fondation Charles Darwin. Cette organisation non-gouvernementale vise la conservation de l’environnement et de la biodiversité dans l’archipel des Galápagos.

Le Grand-Duc est également membre de la Fondation Mentor, fondée par Sa Majesté la Reine Silvia de Suède. Le but de la Fondation, qui est sous le patronage de l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS), est la prévention de la consommation de drogues par les adolescents.

En 1998, le Grand-Duc a rejoint le Comité International Olympique (CIO). Si son agenda le lui permet, il assiste aux réunions des membres du CIO et, depuis 1999, il est également membre de la Commission de la Solidarité Olympique. La promotion des valeurs olympiques lui tient très à cœur et le Grand-Duc a assisté à presque tous les Jeux Olympiques d’été et d’hiver afin de soutenir les athlètes luxembourgeois.

Ses passe-temps favoris sont la littérature, la musique classique, la nature et les sports : le Grand-Duc pratique activement la natation, le tennis, le ski et le ski nautique, la voile et il aime faire de la moto. Le Grand-Duc participe également à des chasses, qui représentent une longue tradition familiale et servent de régulation du gibier et de la faune dans les domaines.

Die ersten Höflichkeitsbesuche von Seiner Königlichen Hoheit dem Großherzog und der Großherzogin führten sie kurz nach der Vereidigung nach Frankreich (9.–10. Oktober 2000) und in die Bundesrepublik Deutschland (11.–12. Oktober 2000), was die vitalen Verbindungen zu den beiden Nachbarländern unterstreicht. Der Kontakt mit den Luxemburgern steht im Mittelpunkt des täglichen Lebens des Großherzogs und der Großherzogin. Neben diesen Treffen informiert sich der Großherzog Henri über alle Aspekte des Lebens in Luxemburg, indem er zahlreiche Institutionen, Vereine und Ausstellungen besucht. Er nimmt an Konzerten, akademischen Sitzungen und sportlichen Veranstaltungen teil. Im wirtschaftlichen Bereich besucht der Großherzog regelmäßig Unternehmen im ganzen Land, oft begleitet von seinem Thronfolger.

Im sozialen, humanitären und öffentlichen Gesundheitssektor wird der Großherzog bei seinen zahlreichen Besuchen, insbesondere in Krankenhäusern und Gesundheitseinrichtungen, oft von der Großherzogin begleitet.

Ein weiterer Aspekt der repräsentativen Funktion des Großherzogs sind Staatsbesuche und offizielle Besuche, bei denen das Staatsoberhaupt Beziehungen zu anderen Ländern knüpft oder stärkt. Bei einem Staatsbesuch in Luxemburg umfassen die traditionellen Stationen das Niederlegen eines Kranzes vor dem Nationaldenkmal für die luxemburgische Solidarität, einen offiziellen Empfang mit Ansprachen und Treffen in den politischen und wirtschaftlichen Bereichen.

Ihre Königliche Hoheit die Großherzogin unterstützt den Großherzog nicht nur bei offiziellen Aktivitäten wie Staatsbesuchen, sondern auch im täglichen Leben.

Die Rolle Seiner Königlichen Hoheit des Großherzogs bei der Regierungsbildung ist in der Verfassung festgelegt. Nach den parlamentarischen Wahlen wählt der Großherzog gemäß den üblichen Gepflogenheiten den Premierminister, entweder nach Ernennung eines Informanten oder direkt nach Ernennung eines Bildungskurses. Der Premierminister seinerseits bemüht sich, eine Regierung zu bilden, die die Zustimmung der parlamentarischen Mehrheit erhält.

In seinen Reden betont das Staatsoberhaupt ständig die Werte, die den luxemburgischen Charakter definieren: Toleranz, Respekt, Würde und Solidarität.

In seiner traditionellen Weihnachtsansprache, die am Heiligabend ausgestrahlt wird, richtet sich der Großherzog an die im Großherzogtum lebende Bevölkerung. Er geht das vergangene Jahr durch und spricht nationale Anliegen sowie spezifische Themen im Zusammenhang mit Integration und Zusammenleben an.

Der Großherzog spricht auch zu den lebendigen Kräften der Nation im Rahmen der Feierlichkeiten zum Nationalfeiertag.

In besonders schwierigen Situationen, wie der COVID-19-Pandemie im Jahr 2020, kann der Großherzog sich an die Bevölkerung wenden, um aufmunternde Botschaften zu übermitteln.

Seit seinem Amtsantritt trägt der Großherzog den Titel General der Luxemburgischen Armee.

Neben seinen offiziellen und protokollarischen Aktivitäten unterstützt und übernimmt der Großherzog die Schirmherrschaft zahlreicher Vereine in den Bereichen Kultur, Sport, Wissenschaft, Umwelt und Soziales. Er interessiert sich für technologische Fortschritte in Bereichen wie Medizin, Kreislaufwirtschaft oder Mobilität. Nachhaltige Entwicklung und der Kampf gegen den Klimawandel liegen ihm besonders am Herzen.

Der Großherzog ist Mitglied des Verwaltungsrates der Stiftung des Großherzogs und der Großherzogin, deren Präsidentin die Großherzogin ist. Die Stiftung setzt sich für die Integration von Bedürftigen und Menschen mit besonderen Bedürfnissen in die luxemburgische Gesellschaft ein. Die Stiftung unterstützt auch internationale Projekte in Afrika und Asien.

Gleichzeitig übernehmen Ihre Königlichen Hoheiten der Großherzog und die Großherzogin die Schirmherrschaft zahlreicher Vereine in Luxemburg, und Mitglieder der großherzoglichen Familie übernehmen häufig ihre Hohe Schirmherrschaft bei bestimmten Veranstaltungen.

Auf internationaler Ebene ist der Großherzog Präsident des Galápagos Darwin Trust Luxembourg und Ehrenmitglied der Generalversammlung der Charles Darwin Foundation. Diese Nichtregierungsorganisation setzt sich für den Umweltschutz und die Biodiversität auf den Galápagos-Inseln ein.

Der Großherzog ist auch Mitglied der von Königin Silvia von Schweden gegründeten Mentor Foundation, die unter der Schirmherrschaft der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) steht. Ziel der Stiftung ist es, den Drogenkonsum bei Jugendlichen zu verhindern.

1998 trat der Großherzog dem Internationalen Olympischen Komitee (IOC) bei. Wenn es sein Terminkalender zulässt, nimmt er an den Sitzungen des IOC teil und ist seit 1999 auch Mitglied der Kommission für Olympische Solidarität. Die Förderung olympischer Werte liegt ihm sehr am Herzen, und der Großherzog hat fast alle Sommer- und Winterspiele besucht, um die luxemburgischen Athleten zu unterstützen.

Familie
Der Großherzog Henri vereint sein Familienleben mit den Anforderungen seines Amtes als Staatsoberhaupt. Der Großherzog hat fünf Kinder aus seiner Ehe mit Großherzogin Maria Teresa und ist Großvater von sechs Enkelkindern. Im Jahr 2010 beschloss der Großherzog, das Haus Nassau zu ändern, um die absolute Primogenitur einzuführen, die die Gleichstellung von Männern und Frauen in der Thronfolge gewährleistet.
