A Cactus cashier is seen in a photo posted on the supermarket chain’s Facebook page on 22 March 2020

Auchan reportedly has not.

“To thank them for their exemplary commitment, as a first step we decided to pay an attendance bonus of €500, which will be paid to them in the coming weeks,” Laurent Schonckert, managing director of Cactus Group, said on 23 March. In addition, hourly overtime pay “will be increased, until further notice, by 100% instead of the usual 50%”.

Schonckert said the bonuses would be paid to “our cashiers, our sales teams, our logistics teams, our purchasing teams, and all of our back-office teams.”

Cactus told Delano’s sister publication Paperjam this week that its promises had all been kept.

Auchan also promised bonuses of roughly €1,000 to “a majority” of its Luxembourg supermarket staff. Earlier this week, the French newspaper Le Monde reported that bonuses to Auchan employees in France had been prorated by hours worked, so that a cashier employed for 10 hours a week would receive €50. It is unclear if the same methodology applied to its grand duchy operations. Auchan did not return Paperjam’s request for comment.

Cora never committed to granting bonuses and has not done so, a trade union source told Paperjam. Cora did not return Paperjam’s request for comment.
